The 1940s

Max Orenstein was one of the owners of Handi-Bag from the 1950s-1990s. Mac Ackerman was one of the other owners, in charge of production.

A patent search discovered this example of a Handi-Bag design. The application is dated January 24, 1947. Max Ackerman is listed as the inventor of this design.

Numerous examples from 10 prominant makers illustrated the article "New textures give new faces to casual bags for fall" on pages 14-15 of the August 1956 issue of "Handbags & Accessories." Handi-Bag's contribution:

"CALF GRAINED smoo/h plastic is used in well styled group at Handi-Bag, 330 5th Ave. Imitation tortoise bar is center of interest in side looped offering. Double handled bag has pleated detail."
